Tom Kirk is an interesting chap. He designs and makes some really remarkable and beautiful lighting which I’ve been shooting for him. His clients have included The Dorchester, Emirates Stadium and Selfridges to name but a few. It’s mainly studio based photography but due to the size and complexity of many of his pieces, it’s easier for me to travel to Tom and “pop up” a full still life studio rig in his space.

The piece shown here is called Facet and features on the covers of the current brochure. It is made up of hundreds of mirror polished stainless steel surfaces.

“I have been working with John for the past year and he has proved an to be an outstanding photographer. As well as someone who is easy to work with, punctual, and very good with his subjects – able to put even the shyest philosopher at ease - he has the fundamental ability to pull out a powerful original shot from a short shoot with nonprofessional sitters - something that is invaluable in my business. Though his work is of the highest order his rates are extremely reasonable. I would recommend him without reservation.” Caspar Melville, editor, New Humanist

Here’s a shot of the Rev Richard Coles, Ex Communard turned Radio Four Broadcaster and he’s also a thoroughly lovely man too. Shot after his Saturday morning show at BBC Broadcasting House, the shoot lasted 12 minutes due to Richard’s busy schedule. In that time I was able to capture 37 images over three different set-ups to provide plenty of possibilities for my client, New Humanist Magazine to select from. New Humanist were able to use four images from this shoot to illustrate their article.

Here’s part of a set of images recently created in my Islington studio for the lovely people over at Harrys of London. This image was a lot of fun to create and was inspired by Harold Edgerton’s famous milk drop images from the 1950’s.
I was working with over £15K of hired-in high speed flash lighting, which provided exposures of around 1/8000th of a second to completely freeze the burst of coloured paint. It took hundreds of very precise throws to hone the paint-flow in order to produce the one “right” explosion.
